My Fat Beautiful Husband is the story of a young woman who marries a truly beautiful man both inside and outside. She’s, in fact, giddy with love for him until he begins to gain weight. She realizes Alfred is still the loving man she married, and she even realizes how fortunate she is to have him for a husband, especially when listening to the insanity of her office mate’s bi polar husband and his unorthodox methods of expressing himself.
‘Alfred laughs and grabs me around my size 23 inch waist and holds a piece of cobbler to my lips, which are shut tighter than a snare drum. I am one of those women brought up to starve herself, so she can attract a man who has all of Alfred’s qualities. But still, I worry’.
The story is told in a comic pathos style. It reflects the present day situation women find themselves in when marrying a seemingly perfect man while at the same time scrutinizing their own behavior to look for flaws without the ability to tell the difference between a flaw and cultural programming put there years earlier.
