A Chocolate Comedy — Comic chaos at its best served up with chocolate and three women whose inherent strength sees them through the travails of work life and romance.
Ella Lady, a Black, six foot, lesbian, sports writer supports her friend Dottie through her various ordeals including Dottie’s troubling romantic life consisting of Boyd whose masculinity rests on Dottie remaining thin and Erp, a chubby chaser, smitten by Dottie when she eventually gains weight during her tenure as a food critic with an eating disorder for the Southern Times.
Erp nearly kills his beloved Dottie by preying on her weakness for chocolate when he takes her to the Chocolateria where she grazes till falling into a diabetic coma. Ella Lady hardly breaks stride by creating a physical fitness program to help her friend recover. Meanwhile, Dottie’s sister Sissy anonymously takes over her column while her sister thins down and shapes up under the loving tutelage of Ella Lady while the men in Dottie’s life find themselves in their own dire straits.
Altogether, a chocolate tour de force with a lot of something for anybody looking for a good read and a peek into the chaos we call the human condition.
